When asked to contribute my thoughts related to our neighborhood, one of the first thoughts that came to mind is its outstanding location! My husband, Ray, and I both enjoy getting our exercise by walking about our neighborhood. We generally use our home on Shasta Ave. as base “camp”. We have a number of what I think of as fun destinations that serve as rewards for taking the requisite long walk.
One of our favorite destinations is Santa Clara University where we can pause to enjoy the lovely and peaceful gardens surrounding the church. The gardens are especially enchanting and romantic when, in the spring, the Wisteria is in full bloom. Sitting on the shaded bench, in the back garden facing the bird bath, one can imagine being present in the times of early California.
Of many other destinations, there are several very special walks. Both are along the Los Gatos Creek Trail. On Sundays, we often go down the trail to Campbell to enjoy and purchase the fresh fruit and vegetables at the Farmers Market. The other walk is in the opposite direction towards Willow Glen, also on the Los Gatos Creek Trail. That part of the trail feels as if it were the “old” days of San Jose when we were still surrounded by orchards. Other great destinations are to walk along The Alameda or to Santana Row, downtown Willow Glen via Lincoln, the Martin Luther King Library, Market Center and of course my favorite shopping center - Sally Anne’s (the Salvation Army). If I can time it just right in the middle of our two or so hour walk and it is around lunchtime we will stop somewhere for a bite to eat!
For very short walks, it is great to wander around the neighborhood especially in the late afternoon hours and enjoy viewing the many well kept and interesting gardens that grace the neighborhood.
