Dear Community Group,

The Alameda community, including the local neighborhood, business and non-profit associations, together with the City of San Jose and the Redevelopment Agency, has been working diligently on the project The Alameda, A Plan for the “The Beautiful Way” to improve The Alameda and to realize its potential as a safe, healthy, and revitalized historic boulevard and business district.

In 2007, the Alameda district was the recipient of a Community- based Transportation Planning Grant from Caltrans to develop a conceptual plan for a revitalized Alameda. After much community input, support, work, and fun, we are nearing the successful completion of the conceptual design phase.  To view a draft of the conceptual design and learn more about the project, please visit http://www.sjredevelopment.org/TheAlamedaTransportationImprovements.htm

The next phase of The Alameda project is detailed design and construction. The City of San Jose Department of Transportation has identified a 2010 Regional Transportation for Livable Communities Grant offered by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission which would fund the design and construction of this project.

One requirement for this Grant is letters of support for the project from local organizations, project partners, transit agencies and elected officials.  Letters of support were an important factor in winning the initial CalTrans planning grant.  If your organization continues to endorse this project, please send a letter stating your support. For your convenience, a sample letter is attached; please feel free to use your own words. We would like to have the letters of support by April 5, 2010. Please address the letter to:

City of San Jose Department of Transportation

Attention Zahi Khattab

200 East Santa Clara Street

San Jose CA 95113

The letters should be signed and can be either scanned and emailed, or a hard copy sent to the above address.

We look forward to the completion of this project. Thank you and your organization for the contribution made to this exciting project and community effort. And, thanks so much for your kind support.

In community spirit--

Larry Clark, President.  The Alameda Business Association

Helen Chapman, President, Shasta Hanchett Park Neighborhood Association
